Frequently asked questions
Skiing or snowboarding – which is better for a first timer?
If you've always pictured yourself on a board – go for it. The start is harder than skiing (expect more tumbles). Once it "clicks", riding becomes wonderfully smooth and progress comes quickly. For your first time, patience and being ready to learn really help – we'll take you to gentle slopes to make the start as comfortable as possible.
How many lessons are needed to ride an easy piste comfortably on a snowboard?
It depends on your fitness and confidence, but from experience about 2 hours a day for 3-4 days usually gets you linking basic turns on an easy run and using lifts without worry.
Will I be falling over loads? What should I expect?
Yes – your first days on a board mean quite a few tumbles. It's completely normal when learning. During lessons we'll teach you how to fall safely and get back up efficiently so you don't waste energy or enthusiasm. We'll show you how to control your speed so your mind keeps up with your body. Proper protection (helmet, wrist guards, padded shorts) makes a huge difference.
How do I choose boots and a board at the start?
Initially, a soft, forgiving board with supportive boots works best. You can hire kit on site – the rental shop staff will help choose board length and set up your angles and bindings for learning.
Regular or goofy – how do you work out the "stance"?
You don't need to know beforehand. We'll do a quick stance test ("which foot you naturally lead with") and help set your position. If needed, we'll adjust your binding setup during the first lessons if your body tells us something different from the theory.
Will I use a chairlift during the first lesson?
We usually start with a magic carpet and a very gentle button lift to sort out your starts, stops and board control. Once we see you're controlling your speed, we'll take you on a chair and show you how to get on and off without stress and what to do if anything goes wrong.
Will I learn to switch, first tricks and try a snowpark during lessons?
Yes, if your level and conditions allow. First we teach speed control and confident heel and toe turns, then we add switch riding, small ollies, rollers or first boxes. We won't chuck you straight onto a big kicker "for the gram".
Does snowboarding strain the back or knees much?
Snowboarding is easier on the knees than skiing, but it can put strain on your back, shoulders and wrists. A proper warm-up, sensible pace and regular breaks plus the right kit greatly reduce injury risk. If you have back or joint issues – please tell the instructor.
Is insurance included in the lesson?
No. Personal accident cover isn't included in a private lesson – however you can purchase the NoRiskSafeFun package from UNIQA through us.
Do I skip the queues during lessons? Do I need a lift pass?
Yes. During lessons you get priority lift access, so you make more runs and progress faster. A lift pass isn't included, but at the STOK office you can buy time-based passes matched to your lesson duration.
